Transforming Your Kitchen on a Budget: Our $5,000 Remodel

Updated: Nov 24, 2023

Low cost kitchen remodel

When we decided to do a kitchen remodel for this house, I knew it was going to require a lot of work. It was dark, gloomy and very compact. The old laminate tile flooring was outdated and ruined and all the appliances and walls were just..well..gross.

Simply said, the entire kitchen was on its last leg! On top of all that, my budget for this kitchen remodel was tight so I had to be thrifty and creative in purchasing materials and find good labor at a reasonable price, too! Hint: get multiple quotes, ask for RECENT references and pictures!

Another large issue was that the Air Conditioning furnace was housed inside the kitchen and it was quite an intrusion into the space (see below).

Despite all this, I was eager to see the transformation!

After doing some Pinterest research, I found my inspiration photo that I knew would be perfect for my kitchen remodel!

The open shelving would help lighten up the space and help it not feel so closed up, and the dark cabinets with gold hardware would give it a modern look and feel.

First Things First to Remodel the Kitchen

Right off the bat, I had the HVAC guy relocate the HVAC to the attic (we did have to purchase a new one since this was very old and upright). Note: I did not include this particular change in my $5000 budget since the unit had to be replaced anyways.

Moving this out of the kitchen enabled the kitchen to have more space for a fridge, which before, awkwardly sat just to the left of the HVAC.

The crew continued to to remove all upper cabinets as well since they were going to be replaced with the open shelving.

After that, he added white, high shine subway tile I found at Floor and Decor at a great price!

We repainted the walls around the space BM Dove White and added much needed recessed lighting to brighten up the space and I added beadboard with a thicker border on top to make it look more substantial.

OLD WALL AND DINING AREA

I loved the Tricorn Black paint color from the inspiration pin and rather than replace all the cabinets, I opted to just paint them and save money since they were in fairly good condition.

All old flooring was removed and a new matte greige slate "look" flooring I found at Floor and Decor was installed. The kitchen remodel was now well underway!

Once walls, tile, and cabinets were completed, I moved onto added butcher block and open shelving.

From Lowes, I purchased oak wood 2 x 12 wood and added a white wash to tone down any yellow and make them a very light wood that would match the butcher block I purchased at the home improvement store. I coated it butcher block with a clear varnish without any stain since it's natural color was very light as I mentioned.

The handyman primed and sprayed the drawers and cabinets with enamel Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black in Satin so there was s light sheen.

We added this beautiful gold hardware I purchased off Amazon (below).

Finally, we bought this over the counter farmhouse sink (you cannot do under mount sinks with butcher block according to my handyman). We then we installed this gorgeous soft gold faucet set from Home Depot.

Final touch were new appliances and a new vent that I found on Wayfair and love. I wanted something that was substantial and made a statement.

For decor, I added some beautiful new dishes, glassware, and a rug from Target. And of course, always add plants!

Over the dining table, I added this beautiful Rattan pendent light to make a statement.

I was really proud of the finished product and thrilled that I was able to do this lovely kitchen remodel for under $5,000 by finding well priced items that looked good and skilled labor at a reasonable cost.
