Throw pillows bring a necessary element of coziness and color into a room. When you are styling a room to prepare it to list, you want to definitely utilize the benefits of throw pillows, since they are a very inexpensive way to upgrade the look and feel of any room.
Since you are preparing your home to sell, you will want to make sure that you stick with neutral colors and not get too adventurous! You are considering your buyer's perspective and sticking to neutral colors is the safest bet to winning them over. However, staying neutral doesn't mean keep it boring. 1. Add a muted black pillow OR muted black and white pillow with
gray/soft brown/beige throw pillows to give your space a modern feel.
Notice the appeal of each of these colors. They are all neutral, and yet, they are all different colors. Each color of neutral pillow is a beautiful color in itself. Combined with other lovely neutrals, it's almost a work of art and so appealing to the eyes. Don't be afraid to combine different colors of neutrals. Just consider that even neutrals have ugly shades and beautiful shades, so choose with that in mind!
2. Use odd numbers
There is almost an inner annoyance inside us when things are too balanced and even. It's like our inner person is saying, "This is boring!" Whether you are decorating a shelf or adding throw pillows on a couch, you want to typically group things in 3s. Our brains seem to enjoy that much more.
3. Choose feather down pillow inserts
Nothing is more unappealing about a throw pillow than one that is rigid looking and feeling. Feather down pillow inserts, because they are maliable and soft, give us a sense of comfort as we see them. For the pillows you have that have removable covers, opt to replace the inserts with feather down options in the same size. For new pillow covers, just be sure to add ones (like the linked image below) in your cart to go with it. Standard size is 18x18 but there are many options!
4. Vary the pillow texture, pattern or size.
Patterns, textures, and sizes are also another must when combing pillows. You don't have to do all three, but maybe at least 2. This is another thing that our brain likes, variation. Pillows or items that are too similar create boredom, whereas the opposite causes our mind to be stimulated and feel interested. It's the power of design. As you can see from the image below, you can add one smaller, more dense pattern (plaid), then a less heavy pattern (lines), and then a solid. If you notice, the yellow color in front is hinted in each of the other pillows, creating further cohesiveness. You can also see that the lumbar pillow in front is a different fabric from the others, creating a variation of texture.
